Current affairs

This is the personal blog of Helle Sjøvaag – or, it’s more like a CV. I am 39 and live and work in Stavanger, Norway as Associate Professor at the University of Stavanger. My main areas of interest are news and journalism, media economy and regulation, online journalism and broadcasting. I tend to approach my subjects from a general sociological viewpoint, often using hybrid methodologies in the intersection between media studies and information science, especially for studying large amounts of digital data.

I’m currently running two projects: A Media Diversity project analysing the diversity of the Norwegian media landscape. The project is funded by the Norwegian Research Council and will develop new methodologies to analyse large amounts of journalistic data published across platforms, regional areas and ownership structures. The second is a Digital News Agendas project on the hyperlink structure in Scandinavia, launched September 2017.  This project is funded by the Ander Foundation – Anne-Marie och Gustav Anders stiftelse för mediaforskning.
